Based out of Pueblo Colorado, Solar Roast Coffee was started in 2004 by brothers Michael and David Hartkop. The two brothers combined their love for coffee and their interest in renewable energy to create their first ever solar roaster out of a satellite dish and 100 plastic mirrors, making not only an amazing cup of coffee but some of the most eco-friendly ever made.

July Classes



Native Medicinal Plants of Southeastern Colorado – Harvesting and Making Medicine

July 9 (9:30-12:00) $15.00

The class will emphasize medicinal plants that are ethically available to wildcraft (harvest) locally in our region. The process of making tinctures, salves, poultices, capsules, etc., will be discussed. The student will come away with a working knowledge of how to prepare his or her own herbal remedies.

Domestic Animal Friend(s) Natural Wellness

July 23 (9:30-12:00) $15.00

Many of us love our animal companions more than we love ourselves (I know I do). This class offers information on nutrition, natural pesticide control and herbal remedies for our pets. We discuss the pros and cons of vaccination and other routinely offered medical treatments for dogs and cats and the alternative approaches to ensuring our loved ones live long, happy, healthy lives. Recipes for food and medicine will be offered and discussion of specific health issues encouraged.


All classes are taught by Melissa Salierno. Melissa is a Certified Family, Consulting and Master Herbalist has been studying natural healing for 18 years. An Introduction to Herbal Medicine

This class will expound on the philosophical, scientific and creative uses of medicinal herbs. It will This class is to introduce the student to the medical efficacy of plant medicine and empower the individual to make their own choices in healthcare. Some scientific data will be presented to help the student understand the difference between prescription drugs and natural plant medicine. The scientific validation of herbal medicine will be presented so that the student understands that herbs, properly used, are a true and well-documented medical modality.

25 Common Herbs and Their Medicinal Actions

We will identify and discuss 25 medicinal herbs and the correct terminology of their medical actions. Big Co-op Thank You!!!!!

Our Earth Day bake sale was a wonderful success!!

Thanks to the generosity, both bakers and buyers, we were able to donate $125.00 to Habitat of Humanity in Japan and another $25.00 to Habitat of Humanity for the tornado victims here in the states. The remainder of the proceeds is paying for new floor paint in the Co-op!!

The Co-op is pleased to announce it is the time of year when local farms start producing and the Co-op's shelves begin to fill with fresh, delicious, organic produce. Currently we have bags of fresh lettuce and ultra green, ultra healthy spinach from our friends at Earth Mountain.

For those who are growing their own food this season, come pick up heirloom seeds and plant starts. All proceeds from the plant starts go to local school gardens.

Also, HOORAY!!! We have Honey!!! Our honey is raw and organic and comes from a farm in Pueblo!

Please note the following:
*Containers with food and liquid residues create a mess & stench! Please bring your containers clean and dry.
*No plastic bags; they are the worst contaminant in the bin.
*Remove all lids from containers. No plastic bottle caps in the bin. No lids from plastic tubs unless they have a recycle number on them. Metal jar lids are accepted!!!
*Only cardboard and paperboard boxes should be flattened
Items Accepted

PAPER
White or pastel office paper, file folders, egg cartons (no styrofoam), paperboard boxes such as cereal and crackers(flatten), paper bags, milk/juice cartons ( no foil pouches), paperback books, phonebooks, magazines and catalogs, brochures, blueprints, newspapers and inserts (no bags), junk mail and greeting cards, corrugated cardboard and cardboard boxes.

PLASTIC
#1-7 Plastic bottles and jars (no caps) and tubs. No microwave trays. No compostable cups!

GLASS
Bottles and jars of all colors.

ALUMINUM
Clean, balled aluminum foil (2" or larger) and pie pans.
Put your Aluminum Cans in the boxes around town to benefit Habitat for Humanity or take them to the Las Animas County Rehabilitation Center to benefit its operations.

Earth Day 2011




Come Celebrate EARTH DAY with the Trinidad Community Co-op

at our PICNIC FOR THE PLANET

EARTH DAY is about helping to acknowledge and educate better ways to support and sustain our earthly lives together, harmoniously and much more!!!!!


Picnic for the Planet is a celebration of the planet we live on, the food it provides, and the people we share it with. In short the planet does a lot for us - we should take it out for lunch!


Schedule of Events


10:00 a.m.- Start your day with enjoyable stroll down the river walk

12:00 p.m. - Join us in Trinidad's Cimino Park for a healing circle and short meditation dedicated to the Earth and the victims of the earthquake and Tsunami is Japan! You can
make a difference!

12:30 p.m.- Come show your interest and help us launch our annual Bike Parade with a short
bike run for the whole family! (Everyone is encouraged to ride a bike to the park!)

1:00 p.m.- Healthy Lunch and Bake Sale at the CO-OP. All proceeds go towards Japan's relief
efforts.

2:00 p.m - Finally join us at the Co-op for a screening of "The 11'th Hour" with Leonardo
DeCaprio, for a film on climate chains solutions
