Lipbone Redding at the co-op!

This Sunday, October 25 at 4 PM, New York musician Lipbone Redding will be coming to the co-op to play music and jam with anyone who is interested. There will be drums provided, and feel free to bring an instrument if you'd like. Check out Lipbone at http://www.lipbone.com

Here's a blurb about his musical style:
Inventive singer/songwriter/ guitarist / voice-instrumentalist and former subway musician, Lipbone Redding revs up the party and creates original songs that effervesce with New Orleans swing, Memphis grooves and New York City style. Known for his ability to use his vocal to sound exactly like a trombone, it’s hard to tell the difference -- unless you witness the phenomenon live. Lipbone and his two-man orchestra make for a show greased with uncanny riffs of vocal trumpeting, booming mouth percussion, hilarious side moments and esoteric lyrics.

Free! See you there.

Our mural is complete

The mural for the outside of the co-op building is now complete, and will be put up soon. Thank you to all who helped with the design and painting!

Also, tomorrow (Saturday) from 9AM-12, we will have a few local farmers selling their produce in the co-op, as a continuation of the farmer's market. If vendors are interested, they may sell their goods at the co-op all winter, now that the season for the market is ended.
Stop by the store this week to pick up your produce!

What is a co-op?

Our Goals
We are helping to build a sustainable community by
  • providing quality products and honest information
  • encouraging member involvement and responding to members’ needs
  • purchasing from local farmers and artisans, therefore bypassing the cost and ecological effects of transportation and packaging
  • creating a sustainable economy by supporting socially and environmentally responsible businesses
  • educating ourselves and our community about food, healthy lifestyles, the environment, and human rights
  • using ethical business and employment practices
  • respecting diversity
  • providing a community hub for events, information, and networking

Cooperatives worldwide follow the following six principles created by the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844-- the seventh principle was adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance in 1995.

1) Voluntary and open membership: Anyone can be a member
2) Democratic member control: One vote per member
3) Member economic participation: A member share is an investment in the co-op
4) Autonomy and independence: Owned by members and for the benefit of members
5) Education, training, and information: Education for members and staff
6) Cooperation among cooperatives: Co-ops help and share information with other co-ops
7) Concern for the community: Community networking—events, communication, donations

Here are some links to great co-ops across the country, so you can get an idea of what we are striving to become:
